Alere Home Monitoring customers at risk from data breach.
More than 100,000 customers of Alere Home Monitoring, headquartered in Waltham, Mass., are at risk of ID theft following the theft of a laptop containing unencrypted data, according to news reports. The company became aware of the breach Oct. 1, 2012.
The laptop was stolen from an employee’s car and included the full names, Social Security numbers and diagnoses of affected customers of Alere Home Monitoring, which provides disease health management solutions. While the data were not encrypted, the laptop was password protected, according to Alere.
The company says it has contacted affected customers with an offer of one year of free credit monitoring.
Alere says there is no evidence that client information has been disclosed or misused following the theft.
